Presentation Title: Türkiye Hydrogen Strategy and the role of TENMAK

Abstract

Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources have declared that hydrogen as one of the priority areas due to its contribution to the sustainable energy. Our aim is, without giving up on our economic development goals, building a carbon-neutral economy model by using hydrogen. By achieving this vision, “Hydrogen Technologies Strategy and Roadmap of Türkiye” was announced by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources on January 2023. He emphasized that the green hydrogen will be an important element for the country’s net zero emission targets.

It was aimed to establish a nationally guided research, technology development support and application program for the domestic development of hydrogen technologies and to determine a strategic action plan beforehand. TENMAK plays a critical role in the development of hydrogen technologies. Clean Energy Research Institute under TENMAK continues its R&D activities in hydrogen technologies and other renewable energy areas. In addition, TENMAK announced hydrogen technologies call within the scope of Technology and Product Development Projects Support Program (TUGEP).

Biographical Sketch

Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Balıkçı graduated from Gazi University in 1992. In 1993, he went to the United States with a YÖK scholarship for master’s and doctoral education. He received his Master’s degree in 1996 and his doctorate degree in 2003 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering, New York University Tandon (New York Polytechnic University). Returning to his homeland in 2004, he started to work as a faculty member in the Department of Electronics Engineering at Gebze Technical University (Gebze Institute of Technology) and still continues his academic activities at the same university. Dr. Balıkçı worked as an electrical transmission systems planning engineer between 2000-2003 at New England – ISO company in the United States. Between April 2014 and August 2020, he served as Institute Director and Chairman of the Board at the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Energy Institute. In November 2019, he founded the Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) in cooperation with TÜBİTAK and TCDD to carry out R&D activities in the field of railway technologies. He continued his duty as the founding Institute Director and Chairman of the Board of this Institute until August 2020. He was appointed as the founding President of the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Institute in August 2020 and as the President of the Institution and Chairman of the Executive Board in January 2021. Dr. Abdulkadir Balıkçı’s academic research areas are Lithium Based Battery Management Systems, Energy Storage Technologies, Electric Vehicle Technologies, Electric Power Systems, Electric Machines, Power Electronics, Electromagnetic Launch Systems and Renewable Energy Systems, etc. Dr. Balıkçı speaks fluent English, is married and has 3 children.
